Why Bake Biscuits In An Air Fryer?
I go on air at HSN frequently, demonstrating products for Ninja, which includes a lot of air fryers. And friends still message me all the time asking, are air friers really that great? They are! And here’s why I love air fried biscuits:
Speedy Cooking: One of the main draws of the air fryer is its speed. Preheating an oven can take some time, but with the air fryer, you’re ready to go in minutes. That means you can have biscuits baked in about the same time it would take to pre-heat your oven.
Crispy Perfection: The air fryer’s convection cooking method works wonders for achieving that coveted crispy exterior. It’s like magic – no more worrying about soggy bottoms or uneven baking. With the air fryer, every biscuit comes out perfectly golden-brown and crispy.
Effortless Cleanup: Say goodbye to scrubbing baking sheets and greasy pans. Air fryer baskets are typically dishwasher-safe, making cleanup a breeze. Just pop it in the dishwasher, and you’re done. It’s a win-win!
Air Fryer Biscuits Recipe Tips
Cold butter is the key to great biscuits. The butter melts and makes steam during the baking process leading to flaky and tender biscuits. Keep the butter and milk in the fridge until ready to use.
It is also important to not overwork your dough once the milk has been added. The more you work your dough by kneading it etc the more gluten development you get. The more the gluten develops the denser your biscuits will be. So just mix your ingredients until they are incorporated, and flatten your dough with your hands instead of a rolling pin. It is fine and expected that you will see chunks of butter in your dough.
When baking in an air fryer it helps to flip the baking products over towards the end of the bake time. This allows the whole item to bake through without the top getting over done.
Ingredients For Air Fryer Biscuits
One of the great things about biscuits is the simplicity. You can usually bake some up (or in this case, air fry them) with just a few simple ingredients in your pantry and refridgerator. Here’s a list of what you’ll need to gather:
- all-purpose flour: All-purpose flour serves as the base ingredient in biscuit recipes, providing structure and texture to the dough while ensuring a tender crumb.
- baking powder: Baking powder is a leavening agent crucial for giving biscuits their characteristic rise and fluffy texture by releasing carbon dioxide gas when heated.
- granulated sugar: Granulated sugar adds a touch of sweetness to biscuit dough, balancing out the flavors and contributing to a golden-brown crust during baking.
- cold salted butter: Cold butter is essential for creating flaky layers in biscuits, as it melts during baking, releasing steam and creating pockets of air that result in a light and airy texture.
- whole milk: Whole milk provides moisture and richness to biscuit dough, helping to bind the ingredients together, while also adding a subtle dairy flavor that complements the other ingredients.
How To Make Biscuits In Air Fryer
In a large mixing bowl add the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and granulated sugar. Mix to combine with a spoon.
Cut cold butter into cubes or small pieces about ½” in size and add to the mixing bowl.
Cut the butter into the dry ingredients using a pastry cutter or two knives.
Pour in the whole milk and stir until a dough is formed.
REMINDER: It is also important to not overwork your dough once the milk has been added. The more you work your dough by kneading it etc the more gluten development you get. The more the gluten develops the denser your biscuits will be. So just mix your ingredients until they are incorporated.
Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and form it into a 1” thick circle or rectangle with your hands. The overhall shape isn’t important since you’ll be cutting them.
Cut biscuits out using a 3” round biscuit cutter, or a shape cutter of your choice. You can reshape leftover scraps of dough and cut out more biscuits until you have no dough leftover. You should get about 6 biscuits.
Place biscuits in a preheated air fryer leaving a bit of space between each biscuit to allow air movement. You may have to work in batches depending on the size of your air fryer.
Bake biscuits in air fryer at 390 F for 8 minutes.
Then FLIP BISCUITS OVER and bake for and additional 6 minutes.
Once baking is finished let the biscuits cool on a cooling rack.
Want an even MORE buttery biscuit? Melt about two tablespoons of butter in the microwave and brush the top of each biscuit with a little butter.
It is SO good! Never have a dry biscuit again with this little tip.
And that’s it! Easy, huh? Golden-brown air fryer biscuits that are sure to impress. Whether you’re serving them up for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, these biscuits are bound to be a hit. So grab your air fryer and get ready to air fry biscuits in no time. Enjoy!
