Some of the best coffee I’ve ever tasted was in Cape Town, and this iced coffee cocktail is a delicious reminder of the creative coffee drinks I sipped while visiting South Africa.
There’s a liquor from South Africa made from the marula fruit. Legend has it, elephants would eat this fruit and get a little tipsy due to it’s natural alcholol content when the fruit ripens and starts to ferment. Considering the size of an elephant, it would take quite a bit of fruit for the alcohol in it to have any effect, so it’s a bit of a tale. But a fun story, nevertheless, and elephants do indeed enjoy snacking on this sweet fruit. I find it to have a bit of a light citrus flavor, and paired with coffee it’s definitely refreshing.
I’ve taken iced coffee here in a very literal sense, brewing a fresh carafe of French press coffee, letting it cool to room temperature, and then filling ice cube trays with the cooled coffee to freeze it and make coffee ice cubes. Pour a little Amarula over your coffee ice and you’ll start preferring this iced coffee cocktail over Irish Cream. Enjoy!
