Driving through the Scottish highlands on winding narrow streets, with each bend in the road revealing another jaw-dropping view of swift moving clouds rolling over green pastures dotted with sheep and the ancient remains of castles– it’s like driving through a movie set. You kind of expect knights on horseback to come thundering down one of these hills at any moment.
Unexpectedly, it’s now one or my favorite road trip memories. Here’s a photo gallery that will have you wanting to hop on a plane to visit Scotland now.
Picturesque drives through countryside …
Sheep so cute you want to take them home with you …
Sleeping in estates that will have you feeling like you’re good friends with Lord Grantham and Lady Crawley…
Ancient twisted trees that will make you peek over your shoulder to look for witches and wizards …
Epic hikes that will trump all your friend’s half-marathon brags …
Castles. Everywhere.
Forget whiskey. You can make your own gin!
You’ll find unicorns!
And giant horses …
And great big harry highland cows! Seriously, is this not the cutest cow you’ve ever seen? Look at that face! I wanted to snuggle him, but he kinda smelled like a barn.
You can look out at the same lush green view of Mary, Queen of Scots.
And walk across a bridge where William Wallace once battled.
Learn the art of falconry from the pros!
Look for wallabies on Loch Lomond. I didn’t spot any, but they’re there! I did find this Harry Potter-esque tree though.
Did I mention the sheep?
And the best part? You can order whiskey with your morning oatmeal. How’s that for starting the morning with a bang? It certainly warms you up, that’s for sure. And you thought the British were all prim and proper. 😉
This post was created as part of my collaboration with Visit Britain. As always, all of the opinions, thoughts, and enthusiasm for travel and food are entirely my own.

Lucky for me I’m based here then! 😉
Although the Radical Road is fairly steep I think a half-marathon probably still trumps it in my eyes!

Lucky you, for sure! I loved Edinburgh. I think I’d be up at Holyrood hiking on a weekly basis.
