WHAT SPICES GO INTO GREEK SEASONING
The Greeks are known for their Mediterranean inspired diet. This includes a variety of delectable meals including grilled meats, fresh fish, marinated olives, and tangy dipping sauces. Having your own homemade blend of Greek seasoning is perfect for flavoring your own colorful Greek salad with homemade salad dressing, or even sprinkling into a shallow plate of olive oil for dipping fresh baked bread. Here’s what is included in our Greek-inspired spice mix …
- Basil
- Oregano
- Black Pepper
- Parsley
- Dill
- Thyme
- Marjoram
- Onion Powder
- Dried Garlic
- Dried Lemon
Sometimes you might also find nutmeg or cinnamon too. Feel free to add those to your liking. I’d recommend adding just a teaspoon at a time until it achieves your desired flavor.
WHY MAKE YOUR OWN SPICE BLENDS?
One of the reasons I like to make my own spice blends is that I can control what’s included. There’s no extra salt, preservatives, hidden ingredients, or MSG. Plus, if you order spices in bulk you can blend up a big batch to give as gifts.
HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN GREEK SEASONING
Mix together the basil, black pepper, dill, dried garlic, dried lemon, marjoram, onion powder, oregano, parsley, and thyme in a bowl. If you’d like a finer, more powder-like texture, pulse the mix in a spice grinder or food processor. Personally, I like the spices in their larger form for grilling and salad dressings. But having a finer texture is good if you want to do a spice rub for marinated grilled meats.
STORING YOUR HOMEMADE SPICES
Once your homemade Greek seasoning recipe is blended, store in an airtight container and keep for up to three months. The Greek spice blend is still good after that, they just become less fragrant and flavorful after three months.
For this Greek seasoning, I made a big batch to give as gifts (ordering most of the spices in bulk from Penzy’s) and stored the spices in Bormioli Rocco Fido Canning Jars with a Blue Lid. Now, these were a larger size so I tripped the recipe for each jar. If you’re making a big batch of Greek spice jars to give as gifts, I recommend ordering the jars in bulk for the amount that you need. Washing and drying each jar. Then open them all up on your dining room table or counter top and add each spice to the jars one at a time. Then you can “mix” the spice blend by closing the jar and shaking it up.
