I love this refreshing summer sangria, a lighter take on the typical red wine version. This past weekend was Memorial Day in the USA which is typically celebrated by gathering with friends and barbecuing. And in the autumn season, I typically bring a pitcher of Autumn Sangria with me to such gatherings. But since the weather is warmer, I thought I’d try something a bit lighter and more refreshing.
I experimented a bit and found the perfect combination for making a sparkling summer sangria. It’s so simple and easy to make. It’s just a little rose sweetened by some lemon lime soda and fruit. You can adjust the amount of rose vs soda depending on how sweet or strong you like your beverage.
WHAT IS SANGRIA
So what exactly is sangria? It’s a red wine punch that originated in Spain and Portugal. Typically it consists of chopped citrus fruit (such as oranges and limes), red wine, brandy, and a splash of lemon-lime soda. Under EU regulations, only Spain and Portugal can label their product as Sangria, but we can certainly mix our own at home.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO MAKE SPARKLING SUMMER SANGRIA
For a summer sangria, I like to use a lighter wine, such as a white wine or a rose. And I also mix up the fruits a little. You could certainly stick to only using citrus fruits, but I like the addition of some summer berries.
As for the soda, that depends on the wine you choose. If you are using a sweet wine, or a wine that you love, just use club soda to give it a bit of bubbles without changing the flavor too much. But if you use a more dry wine, like a Chardonnay, a lemon-lime soda will sweeten it up a bit.
