If you like French toast, you’re going to love air fryer French toast. With crispy edges on the outside, and a tender custard-like center, using an air fryer is the secret to getting perfect French toast done every time. Plus, it’s so easy to use and you don’t have to stand in front of a stove for 20 minutes cooking it.
This blog post will show you how to make delicious and crispy french toast without using any butter or oil, thanks to an air fryer. We’ll show you what ingredients work best and how long to cook it for so that every piece comes out perfect! So let’s get started with this easy recipe!
Why Use An Air Fryer For French Toast?
Air frying uses hot air and convection currents to circulate heat around food, cooking it quickly and evenly while still preserving all of its flavor. So, no more mush soggy French toast! The best part about using an air fryer is that it’s easy to use – just set the timer and temperature controls on the digital display panel and let the air fryer do all of the work for you. It will automatically shut off when cooking time has ended so there are no worries about babysitting, overcooking or burning your food. And cleanup is a breeze too with nonstick surfaces that make wiping up spills quick and easy.
What Kind Of Bread Is Best For French Toast In An Air Fryer?
When it comes to what kind of bread you should use for this recipe, your best bet is any loaf that is dense enough to hold onto the batter. A rustic Italian bread, sourdough, or brioche will work well for French toast. It won’t fall apart and get mushy when you cook it in the air fryer. But you could also use plain sandwich bread if that’s all you have on hand.
The only trick is selecting the right size bread loaf to fit in your air fryer. So a shorter loaf will work well. I have a Ninja XL air fryer and am able to fit two regular slices of sandwich bread at a time.
Making French Toast In An Air Fryer
The first thing you’ll need to do is gather your ingredients: bread, eggs, milk (or almond or soy milk), vanilla extract, and cinnamon. In a medium sized bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup of milk, 1 egg, a teaspoon of vanilla extract, and a teaspoon of cinnamon.
Once all those ingredients are whisked together well, dunk two pieces of bread into the mixture and coat each side. Hold up the soaked bread and let any extra batter drip away.
Once the bread is dipped in your batter, you’re ready to air fry!
What Temperature Do You Air Fry French Toast
First, start by pre-heating your air fryer. Set the temperature to 400 and pre-heat the empty basket for 3 minutes. I like to place a cutting board on my counter to place the air fry basket on to load the French toast since it will be hot.
Once the basket is pre-heated, place the first two slices of soaked French toast inside your air fryer basket and close the door. Air Fry at 400°F for four to five minutes or until both sides are golden brown. You may need to cook it longer depending on how hot your machine gets.
For thin slices of bread, such as sandwich bread, I find there’s no need to flip the toast. It should cook through in 4 minutes. For thicker slices of bread that is more than an inch thick, after 4 minutes carefully turn over the French toast using tongs. Then air fry for an additional two to three minutes until both sides are golden. Repeat this process until you’ve used up all your bread and French toast batter.
French Toast Toppings
The classic toppings for French toast are maple syrup, powdered sugar, and fresh fruit. However you can also top your air fried french toast with a variety of different sauces or condiments like:
- Maple Syrup
- Fresh Strawberries
- Chocolate Sauce
- Sugar-free chocolate sauce
- Raspberry Jam
- Maple Butter (great if using brioche bread)
- Whipped Cream
- Cinnamon Sugar
- Peanut Butter and Jelly
- Nutella or chocolate hazelnut spread (great for thick slices of bread)
Air Frying Frozen French Toast
No time to make French toast from scratch? No problem! You can use an air fryer to cook any pre-made frozen French toast from your local grocer. And it’s PERFECT for crispy, ready-to-dip French toast sticks. It’s so much better than the soggy French toast sticks you’d get from a microwave. I’ve tried both Eggo and a store brand o f French toast and both came out perfectly in the air fryer.
Like I mentioned above, air frying is essentially convection cooking with hot air. So, to cook your frozen French toast in the air fryer, follow the package directions for baking in an oven. Only, reduce the temperature by 25 degrees, and the time by 2-3 minutes. Start by setting the temperature to 400 degrees and pre-heating the empty air fry basket for 3 minutes. Next, reduce the temperature to 375, add your frozen French toast (or French toast sticks) to the air fry basket and cook for 4 minutes.
Best Air Fryers
My favorite air fryer to use for this is my Ninja XL. It has a large basket and heats up quickly. I have made French toast in it so many times without having any issues with the bread getting soggy or sticking like other recipes can do. My second choice would be the Cosori Air Fryer because of its large size and easy to use push button controls.
The Best Way To Store Leftover Air Fried French Toast
If you end up making a big batch of French toast in your air fryer, you can easily refrigerate or freeze what’s left over. I like to keep all of my leftover air fried french toast in an airtight container for up to two days after making it. Just put a small piece of parchment paper between each slice so they don’t stick together.
Then, once you’re ready to eat the left overs, just use the reheat function on your air fryer to toast up the left overs.

Notes
Non-dairy milk choices work great as well! You can subsitute regular milk for almond, soy, cashew, or coconut milk.
Instead of vanilla extract, you could also use Grand Marnier for a citrus flavor, or an amaretto for an almond flavor.

From the time I was a child we used apple butter on our French toast. I still do. It’s the best!
